Hva er en lavvo?

What is a lavvo?

A Sami lavvo is a type of tent used by Sami people groups in Northern Europe. Lavvoen is part of Sami cultural heritage and has been used for millennia by Sami nomads to protect themselves from the climate in the cold Nordic region.

The lavvo is a large, round tent-like structure with a conical roof structure. It consists of a frame made of wooden poles that is covered with skins or cloth. The skins used can be from animals such as reindeer, sheep or deer, and give the lavvo a warm and comfortable atmosphere inside. Modern lavvos today use fabric instead of leather.

Traditionally, the lavvo was used as a dwelling for Sami nomads and their families. People could live in the lavvo for months at a time, and it was moved from place to place as needed. Today, the lavvo is still used by Sami nomads, but it is also used as a tent by outdoor enthusiasts on trips, at festivals and other events where one wants to recreate an authentic Sami experience.

The lavvo also has a strong symbolic meaning for Sami peoples. It represents the history and cultural heritage of the Sami people, and is often seen as part of their national identity. Many Sami people feel a strong connection to the lavvo, and it holds a central place in their cultural customs and traditions.

All in all, a Sami lavvo is an important part of Sami cultural heritage, and a unique part of the Nordic landscape. It provides an insight into how Sami nomads have lived for millennia, and continues to be an important part of Sami life and identity today.
